Valerie Scott is a rising voice in the African-American business community. As a new business owner, author, and entrepreneur, she has quickly become an inspiration for many in the black community.
Valerie Scott began her business journey while still in high school and started sewing for others making prom dresses and tailoring suits for men, and women. Also, designing and sewing bridesmaid’s dresses, wedding gowns and more. She eventually added wedding coordination and decorating venues to her resume. While still in High School she worked for a small woman-owned company called Flags by Lynn where she designed custom Flags and Banners for businesses and yachts from all over the world, such as The Hotel Del Coronado, all Military Ships, USS Shiloh, USS Henry B Wilson, America’s Cup Stars & Stripes, even Buzz Aldrin who walked on the moon, and many more.
In 1998 one day while working she thought to herself and asked (why don’t I buy the business, I was doing all the heavy sewing anyway. Then doubt started to creep in so she did nothing and decided to pray for direction. The answer was always there she was just a little afraid to step out. So, in October of 1999, she took a leap of faith and after much thought and prayer purchased Flags by Lynn. She moved the business home and set up a shop. The phones never stopped ringing and being the only person working and doing everything she was always meeting my deadlines. In 2015 after 35 years of sewing and designing I decided to retire and hang up my needle and thread. Yes, she retired her 1950 Pfaff Sewing machine. In 2020 Valerie decided to stumble back into designing again. This time it was something a little different, she created and designed, mugs, tumblers, key chains, t-shirts, wine glasses, cups, and more. The new company is called Things 4 U, and you can find her on Instagram at: https://instagram.com/thingz4ubyv

Flags By Lynn, was started in the early 1970's by Marilynn Smith Gladhill of Point Loma, CA. She had a small flag shop where she custom flags. She also made custom drapes, Quilts, and Re-upholster the Interior for Boats, Yachts, and Homes.
I started working for the flag shop in the early 80s while still in high school. After high school I left to do other things, but in the early 90's I was asked to come back and I did. I worked several years before I had the opportunity to acquire the company.
I had the privilege to create custom flags and banners for many Nasdaq 500 companies such as America's Cup, Humphries, Hotel Del Coronado, the Military, and many more. In 2015 I decided to retire my sewing machine.
